Thanks for everything, Bill. I followed your substack a while back and I couldn't even tell you how I found it. I didn't connect the dots today that this was the same Bill Arkin who Ken referred to, but when I read Ken's going away present to The Intercept I gained respect for you.
I think loss of institutional knowledge is a huge issue in journalism, and in other industries. Your experience is the best gift you could give to us future news readers.
Thank you for all your work in the part and for supporting Ken in his next venture.
I have a daughter just finishing a masters degree in Science Communications. Aside from being a very good scientist, she’s a fierce and fearless writer, and I pray for her that she finds mentors along the way like you who will help and encourage her such that she find a way to authentically share stories people need to read whether they’re palpable to the powers that be or “dangerous”.
But, but I love to read excessively long investigative journalism, ideally in book length. Unfortunately I am not an oligarch or nepo baby so I can't just divert some of my unlimited income directly to you. If only. I wish more of the remaining Americans that read, read more in depth than they do. We need many more good explainers, but I see how it wouldn't be helpful if folks can't maintain attention.
Bill, your work over the years has been inspiring, and much of it flavors a book I'm just now completing: The Triumph of Corporate Oligarchy: How it Defeatred Democracy, Launched an Endless Fraudulent War, and Ravaged a Flourishing America. Could I suggest your name as a potential endorser? Thanks. (Email your response, please, to richard.behan@icloud.com)
Thank you for everything!!!! I actually found you through your books! I currently have a couple sitting next to me in my bookshelf (top secret america, history in one act, and unmanned are saying hi). Researching about you led me here, and then to Ken through your follow list.
Please know you’ve inspired many of us passionate about national security and geopolitics. There’s nothing more satisfying than finally understanding *why*, than fighting hypocrisy and disdain, than having faith that transparency and/or trust can change things for the better and actually keep people safe.
Your commitment to nuanced factual information is what journalism is, or at least should be. No stirring around the pot, no cherry-picking. Thank you.
I wish you all the best, and looking forward to reading Ken knowing you’ll be around. It’s a passing the torch moment I suppose. You’re amazing, thank you!
